2007 Memorial Day Parade

Thank you to everyone who joined us in the Memorial Day Parade. We had a great time! Special thanks to Mrs. Aliwalas for organizing our march and also to Mrs. Capuano for making the beautiful banner. Thanks also to Mr. and Mrs. Paige for accompanying us with their classic Ford Bronco.

St. Stephen School defeated St. Mary of Branford Friday May 25th to win the 2007 Greater New Haven Parochial Athletic League Baseball Championship. St. Stephen scored 4 runs in the last inning to win 8-7. Vinny Purgatore was the wining pitcher. He pitched the entire game for St. Stephen. Vinny Teixeira had 3 hits and scored 3 runs, including to go ahead run. Lowell Page hit a single to score the tying and winning runs.

Mrs. Hillier's 6th grade class completed the D.A.R.E. program with Officer Morales. The students were asked to write an essay explaining what they learned from the D.A.R.E. program. The first place winner was Nicole Funaro, second place winner wasi Jonathan Aliwalas and Honorable Mention went to Lindsey Miranda.

The May Crowning of our Blessed Virgin Mary took place at Saint Stephen Church on Sunday 20-May-2007.

We all had a wonderful cinematic experience eating popcorn and watching Night At The Museum on Mr. Laguna's big screen projector!


On Wednesday, 09-May-2007, the school held a May Crowning Ceremony. The children had a prayer service and then processed outside to the statue of the Blessed Virgin. A child from each grade presented a rose and placed it in front of the statue. The Blessed Virgin statue was crowned by Kailey Wheeler. It was a beautiful ceremony. A special thank you to Father Bob and Mrs. Moriarty.

Mrs. Brigantic's Grade 8 Spanish class celebrated Cinco de Mayo by doing reports on spanish history, diagrams, playing Spanish music, sharing delicious Spanish dishes and teaching authentic dances such as Salsa and Macarena. Every on had a great time!

St. Stephen School students win Hamden Elks essay contest

Three sixth grade students were the Division I winners for the Hamden Lodge No. 2224 B.P.O. Elks essay contest "Why I'm Proud to Be An American".

First place winner, Jessica Napolitano, second place winner, Nicole Funaro, and third place winner, Joshua Santiago were chosen from schools in the Hamden area. Their essays will be forwarded to the District Chairperson for further judging and, if selected, will continue on to the State Chairperson. The national winners will be announced at a convention in Charlotte N.C. in July.

The Annual Youth Awards Banquet will be held on March 20, 2007. The winners will be presented their award that evening. Congratulations!

On Monday, 28-May-2007 at 10:00AM, St. Stephen School will be participating in the Town of Hamden's Annual Memorial Day Parade. The school will be represented by the HSA, the Student Council, and sports team members.

Great news for the Saint Stephen School Band! The non-profit organization Horns For Kids! has donated a Yamaha alto saxophone to our school.

The 2007 Phonathon was most successful thanks to the generosity of many of our supporters. We were able to raise $9,285 plus the $5,000 in matching gifts. We are very grateful to everyone who has made a pledge. We would also like to thank the following volunteers for making phone calls:

Mrs. Calamita's Kindergarten class is collecting food and toys for cats and dogs to donate to the North Haven Animal Haven. This collection will continue through the Lenten Season.

Our Butter Braid fund raiser begins on March 9th. Butter Braids pastry is a 22oz. frozen pastry dough. When baked, Butter Braids produce a homemade tasting breakfast entree or dessert. In addition to the pasties, Omar coffee and Aspen Valley hot cocoa is also available.

Orders should be returned by Friday, March 23rd. The orders will be ready for pick-up on Tuesday, April 3rd. Your child will earn a Dress Down Day for every 7 items sold!


Catholic Schools Week will take place January 28th through February 3rd. The theme this year is Catholic Schools: The Good News in Education. Click here for the schedule and formal announcement.

Saint Stephen School will be holding an Open House on Thursday, January 11, 2007. There will be a morning session from 9:00AM-11:00AM as well as an afternoon session from 3:00PM-5:00PM. Click here to download the flyer.

Saint Stephen School Student Council Members and Band Members visited the Veterans Hospital in West Haven to spread some Christmas cheer. The Student Council Members sang Christmas carols and the band conducted by Ms. Meister played a selection of Christmas music. The Student Council also distributed care packages to the Veterans. Many thanks to all the parents and students of St. Stephen School and also to Mrs. Hillier and Mrs. Fortuna.

We would especially like to thank the Elks Club for sponsoring the bus to take us to the Veterans Hospital. They made our trip possible.


The Student Council from St. Stephen School had a food drive at their school. With the donations from students and parents they were able to deliver several bags of food to the KC101 Stuff-A-Bus. The collected food goes to help feed families during the holiday season through the Connecticut Food Bank. Thank you to everyone for their generosity.

Congratulations to the Second Graders who received the Sacrament of Reconciliation on 05-Dec-2006. Thank you to Mrs. Nancy Ferraro, Mrs. Carol Moriarty and Mrs. Lori Boni for their diligent work in preparing the children. Thanks also to Ms. Jessica French for providing beautiful music for the ceremony. We would also like to recognize Father Heffernan and Father Meehan for making this a very special evening.

05-Nov-2006: Lunch was held after the 11AM Mass in honor of JoAnn Donahue. Mrs. Donahue was recognized as the 2006 Dedicated Supporter of the Year. For several years, Mrs. Donahue has been responsible for the Annual Christmas Bazaar and Labels for Education. She has also worked on the candy sale, magazine drive, book fair, hot lunch, Stop & Shop cards, and yard duty. In addition to chaperoning many field trips, she has served as a room representative, room parent, and Brownie Troop leader. This year, Mrs. Donahue is coaching the cheerleaders and is handling the new Scrips gift card fund raiser. Congratulations!

The 2nd Grade reached their goal of reading 100 books for the Scholastic Book Clubs' Classrooms Care program. Under this program, 100 books will be donated in their name to children in under-served schools and communities. Select CT on the U.S. Map to see our name. Congrats to Mrs. Ferraro and the 2nd grade class!


The 5th Annual Saint Stephen School Walk-A-Thon was a great success. We managed to raise nearly $12,000! Many thanks to all the local businesses who supported us this year. Congratulations to the Pre-K for raising the most pledges out of all the grades ($1,223). Tiny but mighty!! Congrats also to Mrs. Bromfield and the 4th Grade class for winning the Annual Pig Race. Way to go Mr. Scribbles!!!
